Implementation of Cross Domain Configuration Management (CDCM) for a Large Organization

Modern product line engineering demands a holistic approach to managing configurations across diverse engineering domains, effectively creating an “engineering bill of materials” for the entire product. IBM’s ELM Global Configuration Management (GCM) pioneered this concept but remains limited to the IBM ecosystem, leaving many companies reliant on Excel lists.

Large organizations designing complex systems require inclusive, scalable strategies to transform towards fully digital product development, incorporating MBSE tools, ALM/PLM systems, document repositories, and source code platforms.

This presentation explores the conceptual and technical challenges in developing and deploying an enterprise-wide CDCM platform, jointly developed with Bosch. Key focus areas include:

  1. Systematic re-use of engineering assets
  2. Improved visibility into artifact maturity across lifecycles
  3. Efficient cross-domain baseline management
  4. Laying the foundation for traceability management and digital twins

The CDCM platform, now in its third major release, is being rolled out at Bosch. A live demo will illustrate how key challenges were addressed.

Looking forward, Cross Domain Configurations underpin:

  1. Traceability Management – enabling effective compliance with ASPICE, ISO 26262, and DO-178C
  2. Cross-Domain Reporting – unifying data marts for analysis
  3. Template-Driven Configuration Management – simplifying project initiation
  4. Holistic Variant Management – generating complete multi-domain configurations
  5. Digital Twin Enablement – providing version-aware product definitions

Selected use cases will be showcased. The platform is built on OASIS OSLC standards: OSLC Core, Configuration Management, TRS and Link Data Management.
